A fierce fight against illness
Little Hugh showed overwhelming courage . Despite the pain, the treatments, the hospital stays, he kept smiling. “He was jumping around the house,” his parents say. The innocence of a child facing the ordeal of illness.
The chemotherapy initially seems to be bearing fruit. Hugh returns home. He even rings the bell symbolizing the end of treatment, just before his sixth birthday. Hope is reborn. But, like a sky darkening after a clearing , the cancer returns, stronger, more destructive.
Three months later, the verdict came in: no further treatment was possible . A sentence no one wanted to hear. A few weeks later, Hugh died.
