A doctor finally reveals why the second day of your period is so stressful

Every month, it’s the same story: your period arrives, bringing with it a host of pain, fatigue, and sometimes intense sensations. But there’s one day in particular that everyone seems to agree on for its intensity: the second day of your menstrual cycle.

If you too dread this day more than any other,  rest assured: it’s not just a feeling.  Science confirms that it’s often the most difficult day for many women. Here’s why.

Causes of pain felt on the second day of the menstrual cycle.

It all starts with a hormonal drop

When menstruation arrives,  progesterone and estrogen levels drop sharply . This hormonal imbalance triggers the cycle, but  it also increases sensitivity to pain .

This hormonal shift increases cramps and fatigue, and can also worsen headaches and mood swings. The body generally becomes more reactive and more vulnerable to pain.

Prostaglandins, these small molecules with big effects

Interviewed by the Metro newspaper, Dr. Dawoodbhoy, obstetrician-gynecologist and university physician, explains: “When the lining of the uterus breaks down, the body releases prostaglandins, chemicals similar to hormones.

Their role is to help the uterus contract to expel blood and tissue. But when they are present in excess,  they cause stronger, more painful contractions , and can even limit local oxygenation of the uterine tissue, which  accentuates cramps .

A heavier flow, a more active uterus

Another aggravating factor:  the volume of menstrual flow . Generally, the bleeding is heaviest on the second day. The uterus must therefore redouble its efforts to evacuate it, which  increases the intensity of contractions … and pain.

And what about the other pains in all this?

The drop in estrogen isn’t limited to periods;  it can also exacerbate other chronic conditions  like fibromyalgia or migraines. It’s therefore common to feel  generally more achy, tired, or sensitive during this time.
