Physical condition takes precedence over age

Aging specialists point out that it would be wrong to focus solely on chronological age. As Dr. Philippe Lauwick of the Automobile Club Médical points out: “It is not age that should determine driving ability, but the driver’s actual abilities .” Many seniors spontaneously adopt compensatory strategies: familiar routes, daytime journeys, avoiding highways and difficult weather conditions.
However, a thorough medical assessment may be advisable. Be careful, however: only a practitioner approved by the prefectural authorities is authorized to officially declare a person unfit to drive. This system exists, but is still too rarely implemented.
Self-regulation: a majority trend
Would imposing an arbitrary age limit be the solution? Scientific studies suggest otherwise. Inserm research shows that 85% of older drivers give up driving of their own accord when they perceive a decline in their abilities. There is also a significant gender gap: women generally stop driving three years earlier than men (79 years versus 82 years).
This situation is reminiscent of a professional musician who, feeling his fingers are becoming less agile, decides to put his instrument away on his own. No regulations impose this choice on him—it is his own professional conscience that guides his decision.
Towards a preventive and caring approach

Rather than stigmatizing an age group, wouldn’t it be better to introduce periodic checkups, similar to car technical inspections? Our body also deserves its own road “performance diagnosis .” Targeted information campaigns, voluntary cognitive tests, and better support for aging drivers could reconcile road safety and maintaining autonomy.
Advancing age should not represent a systematic prohibition, but rather a signal for attention. The goal is not to restrict the freedom of older people, but to allow them to continue to move around safely – for their own good and that of other users. Finding the right balance between vigilance and respect for personal independence seems to be the wisest path to take.
