Step 2: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.

Step 3: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and creamy.

Step 4: Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.

Step 5: Stir in the vanilla extract.

Step 6: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until combined.

Step 7: Fold in the chocolate chips and optional nuts.

Step 8: Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

Step 9: Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until the edges are golden brown and the centers are still soft.

Step 10: Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Storage and Reheating Tips

Store chocolate chip cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.

To keep cookies soft, place a slice of bread in the container with the cookies.

Freeze baked cookies in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.

You can also freeze cookie dough balls and bake them directly from frozen by adding 1 to 2 extra minutes to the baking time.

Warm cookies in the microwave for a few seconds before serving for a fresh-from-the-oven taste.
