Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion, and Garlic: A Savory Southern Side Dish

Instructions

Step 1: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook chopped bacon until crispy. Remove bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside. Leave about 2 tablespoons of bacon fat in the skillet.

Step 2: Add sliced onion to the skillet and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more.

Step 3: Stir in chopped cabbage. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 10–12 minutes or until the cabbage is tender and slightly caramelized.

Step 4: Season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes if using. Stir in the cooked bacon and heat through.

Step 5: Garnish with chopped fresh chives if desired and serve warm.

Storage Information

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a skillet over medium heat until warmed through. Not recommended for freezing due to texture changes in the cabbage.
