Hypomelanosis Guttata Idiopathica: A Complicated Name for a Common Phenomenon


These spots are known as idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis, often abbreviated as IGH. Don’t worry: despite its intimidating name, it’s completely harmless.
These lighter areas result from reduced melanin production — the pigment that gives skin its color. Consequently, the skin appears whiter there. These spots are usually a few millimeters wide and can appear on any skin tone.
