Many gardeners typically use gravel, stones, or pottery shards to improve drainage in pots. However, a more natural and sustainable choice is pinecones.
Pinecones may appear as mere forest debris, but they’re beneficial for container plants.
They’re lightweight, biodegradable, and full of air pockets that enhance soil structure and root health.
The Issue with Heavy Planters
Potting soil and moisture can quickly weigh down planters. Over time, even lightweight ones can become cumbersome, making them hard to move or repot.
Adding filler to the bottom is common, but traditional fillers like gravel, stones, or broken terracotta may cause more problems than they solve.
Here’s why:
- Gravel doesn’t improve drainage. It can actually worsen drainage by causing water to accumulate above the gravel layer, keeping soil soggy.
- It adds unnecessary weight. Heavy materials make pots harder to move during the growing season.
- It’s wasted space. Rocks provide no nutrients or root support.
This is where pinecones provide a solution.
