How to Prepare Pinecones for Planter Use
Before using pinecones in pots, prepare them to ensure they’re clean and pest-free:
Step 1: Collect and Inspect
Gather fully opened and dry pinecones. Avoid sticky or green ones. Shake to remove debris and insects.
Step 2: Bake or Sun-Dry Them
Sterilize them by baking in the oven at 200°F (93°C) for 20–30 minutes or sun-dry them outdoors.
Step 3: Cool and Store
Store pinecones in a dry, ventilated space until use. Avoid sealing them in plastic to keep them crisp and dry.
