How often should you shower?

We’re all familiar with that refreshing feeling after a hot shower. Some can’t start the day without it, while others prefer to relax under the water in the evening. But is it really necessary—or even healthy—to shower every day? The answer depends on several factors, from your skin type to your lifestyle. Let’s take a look.

Knowing your skin type: the basis of a good routine

Shower frequency should be adapted to your skin type. If you have dry or sensitive skin, frequent showers can increase tightness, cause redness, and even aggravate certain conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. Dermatologists recommend limiting yourself to  two to three showers per week , favoring  lukewarm water  and  gentle cleansing products .

Conversely, oily skin doesn’t necessarily require more washing. In fact,  too many showers can stimulate sebum production , with an unwanted rebound effect.

Your hair says it all

Hair also has a say in shower frequency. If you have curly or textured hair, washing it once a week is more than enough.  This hair requires natural sebum  to maintain its suppleness and moisture.

On the other hand, people with fine, straight hair can shower (and wash their hair) more often, because  the sebum is distributed more quickly , giving a more visible oily appearance.

Physical activities and the environment: adapt

Do you exercise regularly? Do you work outdoors or in a dusty environment? In this case, a daily shower is strongly recommended,  particularly to remove sweat and impurities , and prevent skin irritation.

Seasons also play a role: in summer, heat and sweating make frequent showers sometimes necessary. In winter, on the other hand,  cold, dry air can weaken the skin . It is therefore best to space out washes to avoid  dehydration and itching .
