Help That Extends Beyond One Night
I thought the story would end there. It didn’t.
In the following weeks, I helped him meet a social worker. I accompanied him to appointments. He found a night job, then a room, then a small apartment. No instant miracle. Just steady steps towards a more stable life.
Today, we still meet. Coffee once a month. He always insists on paying. He asks about my daughter and remembers her favorite color.
What That Night Taught Me
One day, he looked me straight in the eyes and said:
“That night, when you gave me food instead of calling the police, that’s when I understood I deserved to be saved.”
I often think about that noise in the night. The ease with which I could have made a different choice. And how a simple, almost mundane gesture can become a huge turning point.
