A secret that changes everything

That’s when Alain confesses the unthinkable: she has terminal cancer. But that’s not all. She reveals that Alain isn’t her biological son. We grew up side by side without ever suspecting such a thing. He had been adopted at birth, a secret she and Bernard had kept.

After the funeral, I find the courage to talk to Alain about it.

He cried and hugged me. To my surprise, he admitted he’d been thinking about it too. He’d changed, he said. He wanted to honor his mother, to show her his love even after she was gone.
