Noises in the house: what do they mean?

Pipe noises: the language of water

Thumps or vibrations coming from the pipes? Welcome to the world of  hydraulic noise  ! The most common: “water hammer,” a shock that occurs when the water in the pipes suddenly stops.

What to do?  Install a water hammer absorber or check the pressure in your water circuit (around 3 bars on average in France).

Clicking behind the refrigerator: normal or worrying?

Does your refrigerator sometimes make a strange noise, like a quiet clicking sound? This is usually due to  the refrigerant gas expanding  in the lines. This is completely normal.

⚠️ But be careful:  if the noise becomes constant or very loud, it could indicate a compressor problem or a blockage that needs cleaning.

Electrical buzzing or whistling: don’t ignore it

A  high-pitched whistling sound  near an outlet or appliance is a warning sign. This could indicate a loose connection or an overload.

‍ Act quickly:  unplug the affected appliance and consult an electrician. Electrical safety doesn’t wait!

Animal noises: unwanted guests

Some noises are caused by  rodents or insects  in the walls or attic. Scratching, quick footsteps, buzzing sounds: these are all signs that a small tenant has moved into your home.

Gentle solution:  use natural repellents (peppermint, ultrasound) or, if necessary, contact a professional.
