A worrying warning

One ordinary day while I was putting away laundry, Jennifer approached me with an unusual expression. “Mom, beware of Dad,” she whispered in a soft but deep voice. Those few words instantly chilled me. My heart raced as I tried to understand what could possibly motivate such a warning from our daughter. Her tone wasn’t accusatory, just filled with an eerie certainty.
Flustered, I crouched down to her level. “What makes you say that, sweetheart?” I asked, trying to mask my confusion. Jennifer looked away before looking back at me, her eyes reflecting an inexplicable sadness. She remained silent, but her demeanor betrayed an anguish I couldn’t quite decipher.

In the following weeks, Jennifer’s words echoed constantly in my mind. Richard, for his part, redoubled his attention toward us, multiplying tender gestures to win our daughter’s affection. When he suggested an icy outing to relax us, Jennifer accepted after visible hesitation. Throughout the entire walk, she never let go of my hand, watching Richard with a discreet but persistent suspicion.
I tried to rationalize her behavior by telling myself that she needed time to adjust to our new family setup. Yet, despite my efforts to reassure myself, this inexplicable warning continued to haunt me.
