A disaster foretold: when the signs were ignored
Imagine a peaceful volcano, covered in an icy mantle like a frozen dessert , which suddenly awakens with formidable force . This is what happened on November 13, 1985 , at Nevado del Ruiz , nestled in the heart of the Colombian Andes . For several weeks, worrying signals had been accumulating: rumblings , plumes of smoke , slight tremors .
Yet, despite repeated warnings from scientists, nothing was done to evacuate the residents of Armero , a town of nearly 29,000 . When the lava melted the glaciers, gigantic mudflows, called lahars , engulfed the town in the middle of the night. The dramatic result: more than 23,000 deaths . This tragedy, sadly avoidable, remains one of the worst in Colombian history.
Omayra Sánchez: Three days of heroic struggle
Amid the rubble, 13-year-old Omayra Sánchez remained trapped beneath the remains of her collapsed home. Her legs were pinned beneath concrete blocks, leaving her with no way to free herself. Even more devastating, she was held captive by the inert body of her aunt.
For three agonizing days, Omayra endured icy water, hunger, and pain. Despite everything, she kept smiling, exchanged loving words for her family, and impressed the rescuers with her remarkable calm. Her courage, comparable to that of a little heroine , was deeply moving.
