Instructions
Step 1: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the penne pasta according to the package instructions until al dente.
Step 2: Reserve 1/2 cup of pasta water, then drain the pasta.
Step 3: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Step 4: Add the chopped onion and cook until softened.
Step 5: Stir in the minced garlic and red pepper flakes, cooking for about 1 minute until fragrant.
Step 6: Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, sugar, salt, and black pepper.
Step 7: Simmer the sauce for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Step 8: Add the cooked penne pasta to the skillet and toss to coat in the sauce.
Step 9: Stir in a small amount of reserved pasta water if needed for a smoother sauce.
Step 10: Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese and garnish with fresh parsley.
Step 11: Serve warm and enjoy.
Storage and Reheating Tips
Store leftover pasta in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Reheat in a skillet over medium heat with a splash of water to loosen the sauce.
Microwave individual portions for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring halfway through.
