When Silence Replaces Tears


For years, I thought my husband, Julien, couldn’t show his emotions. Reserved, quiet, almost impenetrable. When our teenage son left us suddenly, I was overwhelmed with immense grief. I needed to cry, talk, sometimes even scream. Julien, however, remained upright. Calm. Silent.
At the hospital, he stood apart, motionless. During the farewell ceremony, his face revealed nothing. Once we returned to a house that felt too big and empty, he buried himself in work and daily routines. I interpreted his behavior as a lack of sensitivity. As time passed, this misunderstanding grew between us.
A Quietly Growing Distance
Unshared pain creates chasms. I felt like I bore my grief alone while Julien seemed to move forward. Gradually, anger replaced sadness. We spoke less and less. The silences grew heavy, almost suffocating.
Eventually, our paths separated. No shouting, no confrontations. Just an emotional fatigue accumulated over the years. I left the city to try to rebuild myself. Julien, for his part, moved on with his life. We never spoke again.
