Why Pope Francis’s ring will be destroyed after his death

It’s a centuries-old tradition, little known to the general public, but essential to the history of the Vatican: upon the death of Pope Francis, his Fisherman’s Ring, a symbol of his spiritual authority, will be destroyed. A powerful gesture, laden with meaning, that opens a new chapter for the Catholic Church.

The death of Pope Francis: a global event

On Monday  , April 21 , Pope Francis  passed away peacefully  at the age of  88 , the victim of a  stroke  that led to  irreversible heart failure . Cardinal  Kevin Farrell ,  Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church , announced the sad news:  “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome returned to the Father’s house.”

After  twelve years of pontificate , marked by his humility and his commitment to the most deprived, Francis leaves a  profound spiritual legacy .

The Fisherman’s Ring: More than a jewel, a symbol of authority

Worn on the ring finger of the pontiff, the Fisherman’s Ring represents  Saint Peter , the first pope and  humble fisherman who became the foundation of the Church . Since the 13th century, this ring has also served as an official seal to  authenticate papal documents .

But as soon as the Pope dies, a tradition is imposed:  the ring must be destroyed . Why? To  avoid any identity theft  or falsification of documents during the period of vacancy of the apostolic see.

It’s a bit like deactivating an electronic signature today  : an essential step to prevent any fraudulent use of the deceased’s authority.
