Between triumphs and fragilities

From the late 1930s onward, Vivien showed signs of bipolar disorder. She alternated between periods of euphoria and episodes of deep depression. Despite this, she continued to shine on stage and screen,  without revealing her torment.

The filming of  Caesar and Cleopatra  in 1945 marked a turning point. Exhaustion, media pressure, and a bout of depression weakened the actress. Added to this was a tuberculosis diagnosis shortly afterward, which seriously affected her health.
