Not every pain is harmless. A sore back, a heavy stomach, or a stubborn headache can be blamed on stress, poor sleep, or a hectic routine. Often, this is true. However, pain can sometimes be an early, subtle warning of a deeper issue.
Many believe cancer only presents with clear symptoms like a lump, persistent cough, or skin changes. In reality, the body can send subtler signals well in advance. One key signal is persistent pain—pain that doesn’t go away, has no clear cause, or keeps returning.
This doesn’t mean every ache indicates a serious illness. It means that unusual, long-lasting pain deserves attention. Below are three types of pain that should not be ignored and might be linked to early cancer stages.
1. Ongoing Abdominal Pain With Other Symptoms
Abdominal pain can be misleading. Often caused by gas, indigestion, or diet, it may not be serious. But if it keeps returning, lasts weeks, or doesn’t improve with diet changes, it’s important to take note.
Cancers in the digestive system—such as the stomach, liver, intestines, or pancreas—can start with mild pain that becomes more noticeable. This early pain is often dismissed.
Be aware of abdominal pain paired with:
- Constant bloating or a feeling of fullness
- Frequent nausea or upset stomach
- Loss of appetite or feeling full quickly
- Difficulty eating regular portions
