Kota (South African Street Sandwich)

Kota, also known as a South African street sandwich, is a beloved and indulgent fast food dish often found in the townships. It’s made by hollowing out a quarter loaf of bread and stuffing it with layers of fries, meats, cheese, and sauces. It’s customizable, messy, and absolutely satisfying.

Ingredients:
1 quarter loaf white bread (unsliced)
1 cup French fries (hot and crispy)
2 tbsp atchar (spicy pickled mango, optional)
1/4 cup shredded lettuce
1/4 cup sliced tomatoes
2-3 slices cheddar or processed cheese
4-5 slices cooked polony, bologna, or sausage
2-3 strips cooked beef or chicken (grilled or fried)
2 tbsp barbecue sauce
2 tbsp tomato sauce (ketchup)
2 tbsp creamy sandwich sauce or mayo
1 egg, fried or scrambled (optional)
