An allergy taken seriously… but not seriously enough

Since childhood, Hannah knew she should avoid any food containing  peanuts . She was always very careful. She read labels, asked questions, and always carried her  epinephrine auto-injector pen  to counteract allergic reactions.

But on the day of the tragedy, a brownie given to her by a friend was enough to turn her fortunes upside down. This brownie contained  roasted peanut flour , used as a  gluten-free alternative . An increasingly common substitute, but  little known for its risks  for people with allergies.
