But the most common—and probably the simplest—hypothesis is that of entertainment. It could be an impromptu game, a challenge between friends, or a simple act of nonchalance. A worn pair of sneakers, a quiet street, and hey presto, we try to hang them on the line like a hoop. It’s a bit like  the visual version of “neighborhood firecracker”  :  useless but fun .

This phenomenon has been observed in many countries, with no apparent connection to crime or a hidden message. It seems that people are simply perpetuating what they’ve seen elsewhere, like a modern urban tradition. A bit like writing your name on a tree or leaving a padlock on a bridge: a small act that leaves a mark.
