Common household product leaves little girl ‘blind in one eye’

Why are these capsules so dangerous for children?

At first glance, these capsules seem harmless. They are colorful, shiny, and sometimes scented:  a real visual trap  for toddlers, who easily mistake them for candy or toys.

Once punctured, the capsule releases a highly concentrated gel of chemical agents. On the skin, in the mouth, or in the eyes, this gel causes aggressive reactions: chemical burns, blisters, damage to the mucous membranes, and, in extreme cases, partial or total loss of vision.

The testimony of other families

Luca is unfortunately not an isolated case. Last October, the son of McFly member Harry Judd also suffered a burst capsule in his eye. It took  22 liters of  emergency rinsing solution to prevent permanent damage.

His wife, Izzy Judd, appealed:

“Caution reminders are never useless. Never underestimate how quickly an accident can happen.”

How to better protect your children?

To avoid further tragedies, here are some simple and effective measures:

  • Store laundry capsules up high, out of sight and reach of children, ideally in a locked cupboard.
  • Explain to children from an early age that these products  are not toys .
  • Choose products with secure packaging and clear warnings.
  • In case of contact with eyes or ingestion, rinse immediately and thoroughly with clean water and consult  a doctor immediately .

Towards better prevention

In response to these incidents, manufacturers, such as Unilever’s Persil brand, have announced that  they are strengthening their warnings and safety advice . However, parental vigilance remains the first line of defense.

A domestic accident  often happens faster than you think . And as a French proverb so rightly reminds us:  “Prevention is better than cure.”

Be vigilant, protect what is most precious to you.
